Dermal Fillers and Neurotoxin Procedures in Northeast Ohio: What to Expect

If you’re considering cosmetic facial treatments, here’s what to expect with filler and neurotoxin procedures from Allied Dermatology and Skin Surgery. Our team of board-certified dermatologists and nurse practitioners is dedicated to treating each patient with compassionate care.  We’ve treated hundreds of patients just like you, helping them understand the procedures, ease their anxiety, improve their health and enhance their quality of life.

Friendly, Professional Visits

From the initial consultation to the actual procure and follow-up, several appointments are typically needed. During the first appointment, we’ll evaluate your goals and discuss any fears or concerns you might have about the procedure.  We’ll also tell you exactly how the procedure will be performed to determine the most appropriate treatment plan you.

Neurotoxins do not take very long to inject, so these can often be done the same day as the consultation.  Dermal fillers usually require more time to administer, so treatments will be scheduled after the consultation. After your initial filler procedure, a follow-up appointment will be scheduled two to three weeks later in order to monitor your progress and ensure you are happy with the results.

Efficient, Professional Service

During every visit, consult and procedure, you can expect to receive efficient, thorough and professional service.  A consultation appointment will take 10 – 20 minutes, while the neurotoxin procedure will take 5 – 10 minutes, and most patients do not require numbing.

Filler appointments typically take 20-30 minutes. For your comfort, we can apply numbing cream prior to the injection to minimize any discomfort from the needle. The length of the injection procedure will vary depending on the number of syringes used and areas injected. A single syringe can take 10 -15 minutes, while multiple syringes may take 30 – 45 minutes.

Follow-up appointments typically last 10 – 15 minutes. Photos will be taken before and after the injection. It is important to note that these are general time estimations, and the exact length of the appointments may vary based on individual factors and the complexity of the treatment.

What is Recovery Like?

Recovery after neurotoxin and filler procedures is usually minimal, and most patients are able to resume their normal activities immediately. There may be some mild discomfort or tenderness at the injection sites, which typically resolves within a few days.

Swelling or bruising are rare after neurotoxin treatment, while quite common after filler injections.  Patients are generally advised to ice the treated areas and avoid exercise and alcohol consumption for at least 24 hours after the procedure. You may also be advised to avoid certain medications or supplements that can increase the risk of bleeding or bruising.

In rare cases, patients may experience more severe side-effects such as infection, allergic reactions or persistent swelling or pain. If that occurs, treatment with oral antibiotics or steroids may be required.

When can you expect to see results?

Neurotoxins start to work about three to five days after injection. Full toxin effect can take up to fourteen days.  Filler results can be seen immediately, and patients will often note some improvement on the day of the injection. However, swelling usually onsets the next day and patients can look worse before they look better.  Patients will see final results within a few days to two weeks as the filler fully hydrates and the swelling and bruising resolves.

How long do those results last?

The duration of results from neurotoxin treatments can vary depending on several factors, including the type of toxin used, the dosage and the patient’s metabolism.

Generally, the effects of traditional neurotoxins, such as Botox®, Dysport®, Xeomin®, and Jeuveau®, last three to four months. While a newer toxin, like Daxxify®, may last up to six months. The duration of results may also be affected by the area being treated, sun exposure and the patient’s facial anatomy.

Similarly, filler results vary depending on the type of filler used, the location of the treatment and the individual. In general, hyaluronic acid fillers last from 6 – 24 months, while calcium hydroxylapatite fillers can last up to a year. Hyaluronic acid fillers have the unique property of being able to be dissolved. This makes them the safest fillers in the rare event of unwanted filler placement, migration, or adverse reaction.
